The week in AI training work: open roles fall 5.6%, Handshake AI's wage lawsuit is paused for mediation
Week of 19 to 25 Oct 2026: open roles fell 5.6% on the platforms read the same way all week, 20 boards were read for the first time, and Handshake AI's wage lawsuit was paused.
AITraining.jobs research team · Published
On the 36 platforms we read the same way all week, open AI training roles fell 5.6%, from 4,179 at the start of 19 Oct to 3,947 at the end of 25 Oct 2026, as 474 removals outran 289 new listings. The board as a whole went from 4,397 to 4,336 open roles on 56 platforms, and that total is how we read the market, not the market: 20 platforms' own job boards were read for the first time, while Mindrift's board dropped 220 roles in a single day.
Outside our data, the week's news came from a courtroom and a research group: a federal judge paused the wage lawsuit against Handshake AI until a mediation on 4 Feb 2027, and researchers reported that Outlier, Scale AI's platform, paid the European workers they studied an average of €1,214 a month. Prolific promised refunds if an AI agent slips into a study, and Maxinsights raised $30 million to pay contractors to film everyday tasks for robots.

Where the open roles moved
Law, Medicine & Finance remained the largest kind of AI training work, with 1,575 open roles on the board at the end of 25 Oct. On the comparable platforms it eased from 1,490 to 1,443 (-3.2%), as 176 new listings almost kept pace with 188 removals. The steepest falls among the larger kinds were in multilingual work, down from 930 to 843 (-9.4%) with 21 new listings against 108 removals, and in AI evaluation and rating (RLHF), down from 167 to 143 (-14.4%). Transcription, audio and speech went from 575 to 545, and coding and software evaluation from 327 to 309.
Only two kinds grew, both small: agentic tasks and RL environments, from 74 to 81 open roles with 14 new listings, and robotics and physical-AI data, from 64 to 69 with none removed. Red-teaming and AI safety fell from 57 to 49 and writing from 46 to 38.
Among the comparable platforms, Welo Data moved most: no new listings and 58 removals took it from 237 to 179 open roles. Alignerr went from 432 to 378 (39 new, 93 removed), Turing from 208 to 168, and Mindrift, besides the batch left out of the comparison, from 101 to 56. Of the biggest movers, only micro1 grew, from 243 to 271 with 70 new listings. No country went from no open roles to some, or from some to none, on these platforms.
Pay
The median advertised hourly rate of the open roles on the comparable platforms went from $42 to $43. Within the kinds, Law, Medicine & Finance rose from $70 to $75, while RLHF evaluation eased from $55 to $50.50, data annotation from $30 to $25 and writing from $60 to $52.50. Multilingual work held at about $35, transcription and audio at $30, coding at $62.50 and math and STEM at $40. A median moves when the mix of open roles moves, so these say which roles were open, not that anyone got a raise.
The week's new programs on platforms we already read carried some of the highest rates on the board. Mercor opened 13 roles in medicine and nursing on 19 Oct at a typical $200/hr, and micro1's 4 new agentic and RL environment roles of 23 Oct advertise a typical $65/hr, up from $35/hr on its earlier roles of that kind. These are advertised rates, not guaranteed earnings.
New on our board this week
20 platforms' own job boards were read for the first time this week. The largest were RWS TrainAI Community with 127 open roles, such as voice recording and speech evaluation in many languages, at a typical $16/hr; DataAnnotation with 112 at a typical $80/hr; and TELUS Digital AI with 66. Surge AI's own board added 13 roles at a typical $300/hr, for journalists, university professors and constitutional lawyers among others. Three AI labs now appear with AI training roles of their own: Anthropic (2, fellowships in conceptual reasoning and STEM), Mistral AI (3) and Cohere (3). Being new to our count does not make any of them new to the market, which is why they stay out of every rise and fall above.
On the platforms we already read, the hourly detection caught new kinds of work. micro1 opened 42 domain-expert roles on 19 Oct (business operations, procurement, transportation and warehousing, finance and accounting among them) and 16 law roles on 20 Oct, including cite-checking work for law students. Mindrift and Handshake AI each opened 3 new roles in medicine and nursing, and TransPerfect DataForce listed its first 2 robotics data roles on 23 Oct.
Two boards were read differently on single days, and those roles count on neither side of the comparison: Mindrift's dropped 220 roles on 22 Oct and Weekday's 101 on 21 Oct, each a batch out of line with the platform's own week. Six boards first read on 18 Oct, between this post's week and the last one's, were read all week and are in the comparison: Weekday, Rise Data Labs, Volga Partners, Lifted (Upwork), Innodata and the Scale AI Human Frontier Collective.
What the AI labs are hiring for
On 26 Oct 2026, 16 of the 25 AI labs whose public job boards we read had 90 roles open on the teams that buy, run and evaluate human data, 2.6% of their 3,515 open roles, against 101 on 17 Oct. xAI still had the most, 15 of its 298, down from 24.
Evaluations are now the most common of these jobs, 22 roles at 10 labs, ahead of human-data operations (20) and AI tutors and raters (17, at Cohere, Mistral AI, Skild AI and xAI, against 25 on 17 Oct). 6 roles buy or license data, at Mistral AI, OpenAI, Reflection AI and Thinking Machines Lab. 37 of the staff roles state a yearly salary range, the middle of the median range being $284K, and the 22 contract roles that state an hourly rate pay $18 to $100 an hour. This week's podcast episode reads what those postings ask of the people who take them.

A judge pauses the lawsuit over how Handshake AI classifies its AI trainers, pending mediation in February
In Boggs v. Stryder Corp. (Handshake and Handshake AI Solutions), the parties agreed and the federal court for Northern California ordered on 22 Oct that the case be paused until a mediation set for 4 Feb 2027, with the December case conference called off; Handshake keeps its right to ask for arbitration. The complaint, filed on 20 Jul 2026, alleges that Handshake AI treats its AI trainers as independent contractors while setting their pay, capping their weekly hours and requiring unpaid assessments, and claims unpaid minimum wages and overtime under federal and California law. These are allegations; nothing has been decided. We found it only in the court record.

Southwest pilots' union objects to the sale of Spirit's employee data, in which Mercor is the alternate bidder
The Southwest Airlines Pilots Association filed a limited objection on 21 Oct to the proposed sale of Spirit Airlines' de-identified data, ahead of the hearing set for 6 Nov. Law360 reports that the union objected to the $10 million sale, saying it would adversely affect flight crews by sharing training and employment information; the rest of its story is paywalled. Google is the buyer, Mercor the alternate bidder, and micro1 has filed notice of a competing bid, as our last post reported.

Researchers say Outlier, Scale AI's platform, tracks its European AI trainers and pays below its advertised rates
A report by the research group DiPLab with Reversing.Works and Intérêt à Agir, published on 15 Oct and covered through this week, interviewed 35 Outlier workers in Europe and audited the platform in their browsers. It counts 16 trackers, including session recording and Persona's face scans for identity checks, an average income of €1,214 a month, 30% below the cost of living in the workers' countries, and 1 in 4 workers who earned nothing during the study. On identical projects it reports rates from $10/hour for Portuguese speakers to $50 for Swiss German workers, and a $20 hourly rate that could fall to half after 10 to 20 minutes of work. The authors argue that some of these practices likely breach EU data protection law (GDPR). El País, reprinted by Primicias, says Scale AI, through Meta, did not answer its questions.

Prolific promises refunds if an AI agent gets into a study, and publishes its screening figures
Prolific launched a 100% Human Guarantee on 20 Oct: if an AI agent passes its checks and is detected in a study, it pays the researcher back twice the cost of those participants. It says only 13% of people on its waitlist are invited, 55% of those pass onboarding, its September audit flagged 0.99% of participants for AI-generated responses, and its check for free-text answers written with AI tools has 98.7% precision. Its minimum participant reward is $8.00 an hour. The figures are the company's own.

A Princeton PhD's $70-an-hour Mercor work ran 4 to 20 hours a week, then dried up
The Wall Street Journal profiled Jack Weis, a chemical engineering PhD who has applied for more than 2,300 jobs since earning his doctorate. As retold by Yahoo News UK, he briefly had work through Mercor at $70 an hour, writing chemical engineering prompts and evaluating the model's answers, but his hours ran from 4 to 20 a week before the work dried up. An advertised hourly rate is not a promise of hours. We could not open the Journal's own article, which is paywalled.

Maxinsights raises $30 million to pay contractors to film everyday tasks for robot training
Forbes reports that Maxinsights raised a $30 million seed round led by Peak XV. More than 5,000 contractors in six countries wear its head, wrist and chest cameras while doing tasks such as loading dishwashers, and the company says it has captured more than 2 million hours of footage and serves more than 30 customers, including frontier AI labs. The article gives no pay rate. On our board, robotics and physical-AI data was one of only two kinds of work that grew this week, from 64 to 69 open roles on the comparable platforms.

How this post is counted
- The week is the seven full days (UTC) before the day of publication. A role is open at a moment when the platform's board lists it then; a new listing is one dated in the week; a removal is one no longer listed.
- Every "rose" or "fell" is measured on the platforms read since before the week, each role dated by the day the platform says it posted it (else the day we first saw it). A platform whose own board was read for the first time is left out. A day on which our feed reached roles the platform posted earlier (its undated sightings more likely that than new roles, by a model fitted on the roles that are dated), or on which a platform's removals were out of line with the rest of its own week, is how a change in what the board reads looks, not how hiring looks: those roles count on neither side.
- Pay is the advertised hourly rate (the middle of a stated range); a median is given only where at least 3 roles state one. A country opened when no role was open to it as the week began and some are at its end, and closed the other way round.
- Platform news comes from the outlet or company named under each item, linked and dated. The post's words are fixed on its day; a correction is added below them with its date.
