Software Engineer

Opportunity Overview

Handshake is looking for experienced senior software engineers to support AI research through a 1-week contract (40 hours), renewable on a weekly basis. This is not a traditional job. You’ll draw on your hands-on experience building and reasoning about production systems and software architecture to evaluate AI-generated content and provide feedback that helps AI reason like a practicing software engineer.

Contract Details

• Term : 1-week contract, with 40 hours of work per week
• Pay: $6,000 per week ($150 per hour)
• Renewal : Renewable on a weekly basis, with no long-term commitment required from either side
• Schedule : Work remotely and set your own hours, as long as you complete your weekly hours

What You’ll Do

• Use your domain expertise to create expert-level software engineering problems and scenarios grounded in real system design, architecture, and implementation work
• Review and evaluate AI-generated responses for technical accuracy, practical feasibility, and alignment with how the work is actually done
• Provide structured written feedback to help improve AI model performance
• Work on your own schedule, completing 40 hours of work each week

Ideal candidates meet all three of the following

• Industry/research experience : 3+ years of professional, direct hands-on work as a software engineer
• Degree : Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field
• Sub-domain depth : Demonstrated expertise in one of the following areas: Backend systems and distributed architecture
• Infrastructure, cloud platforms, and DevOps
• Systems programming and performance engineering

Additional qualifications (not required, but strengthen your application)

• Experience at a recognized, top-tier tech company

• Availability to commit 40 hours per week
• Strong written communication and attention to detail
• Ability to explain complex software engineering concepts clearly
• Ability to work independently in a remote, asynchronous environment

Our interview process has three stages

• CodeSignal assessment: Take a coding assessment to show us your engineering skills.
• Sample task: If you pass the assessment, you’ll try out the real project.
• Project placement: Candidates who pass the sample task are placed on the project.

As an incentive, you’ll be compensated for each step that you pass.
